Sleeping enough during the night has many health benefits. Getting enough sleep will not only make you feel better throughout the day, but also to help improve your overall health. Because sleep is so important for us, you may be wondering how you can get more of it. Below, all Seasons Pools & Spas lists the top six ways to get more sleep.
Number 1: Have a Bedtime Routine
Research has shown that having a routine before bedtime helps people get to sleep quicker. Your routine doesn’t have to be long or complicated though.
Simple bedtime routines can include:
- Bathing
- Using essential oils
- Soaking in a hot tub
- Reading a book
- Listening to gentle music
When creating a bedtime routine, include the activities that are most relaxing to you. Try your best to begin and end your bedtime routine at the same time each day to ensure consistency.
Number 2: Read a Book Before You Sleep
There’s a reason our parents used to read to us in bed. It helps us go to sleep! Reading just 30 minutes before bedtime can promote better sleep. This is partly to do with the fact that reading a book keeps our eyes away from the TV screen, which keeps the brain awake for longer than normal.
Number 3: Reduce Screen Time
If reading a book before bed isn’t your thing, there are still plenty of ways you can reduce your screen time. You could do crosswords, play board games, soak in the hot tub, or catch up with your family. Reducing screen time decreases the time it takes to fall asleep because screens emit blue light. Blue light signals to the brain that it’s daytime and to stay awake.
Number 4: Stop Watching TV in Bed
Though you may enjoy watching TV in bed before you go to sleep, it may mess with your sleep. Research has shown that people who only use their bedroom for sleep end up getting better sleep on average. When we start using our bedrooms for things like watching TV or checking our phones, our brains start to associate those actions with the bedroom. By disconnecting those actions from the bedroom, your sleep will improve!
Number 5: Get Some Exercise
You may have thought about exercising as a New Year’s resolution for weight loss, but it has other benefits too! Exercising in the morning promotes better sleep by the end of the day. The general idea is that exercising any time before a few hours before you plan on going to sleep will help you sleep better.
Looking for a fun, new way to exercise? Take it to the water! If you have a swim spa or swimming pool in your backyard, try including a water workout into your exercise regimen. The water can help to lift pressure from your body, creating a more comfortable workout, while at the same time adding some resistance for you to work against.
Number 6: Relax in a Hot Tub
You may think relaxing in a hot tub is only good for de-stressing, but it can help you get to sleep too! Sitting in a hot tub raises your core temperature while getting out decreases it. This fluctuation of core temperature mimics the process the brain uses to tell your body it’s bedtime. You can even experience some of the other great benefits of hydrotherapy, like reduced muscle inflammation and soothed joint pain. While you soak in a hot tub, you can even read a book or make it part of your bedtime routine!
